As though to obscure the personal, political, or philosophical motives that made men reluctant to participate in the war, William Trowbridge's 1862 print Candidates for the Exempt Brigade seeks to associate such resistance with cowardice. Few eligible civilians, if any, mutilated themselves to avoid service.

Despite this attempt by Harper's Weekly to shame men from hiring substitutes if they were chosen for service, it eventually became the most popular alternative.
